The Job:

We are seeking a reliable and experienced Assistant Pastry Chef/Baker to join our team. As an Assistant Pastry Chef/Baker you will report to and assist the Pastry Chef with all day-to-day activities as instructed.

This includes, but not limited to: menu development and production, inventory and purchasing, managing daily a la carte menu, plating menu selections, as well as production for special occasions, special functions, banquets for residents and their families.

The job may require some longer hour days to accommodate special activities or events.

The Assistant Pastry Chef/ Baker is also expected to take on the lead role in the absence of the Pastry Chef and manage the department accordingly.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Prepare high-quality dessert items according to standardized recipes and daily prep list to meet production, delivery and service schedules for a population with diverse needs and high-end quality preferences.
  • Serve dessert items or prepare for delivery by using correct portioning, meeting outlined standards, ensuring that desserts are always attractive and tasty.
  • When requested, meet with resident(s) and Familiy(ies) to plan dessert options for special events.
  • Make recommendations with regard to menu, equipment and supply needs.
  • Clean station after preparation and serving, maintaining high standards of cleanliness.
  • Store or discard excess dessert items in accordance with safe food-handling procedures.
  • Keep refrigerators, freezer and storerooms clean and neat. Ensure desserts and supply items are stored per Board of Health standards.
  • Able to work in the kitchen area where sharing of equipment and space is an important part of the kitchen teamwork.

Job Requirements:

  • Maintain high standards of quality in dessert preparation using standardized recipes, proper cooking methods and portion control.
  • Self-motivated, positive and creative pastry expert with good communication skills and strong multi-tasking abilities.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekend/holiday shift(s).
  • Must be able to work quickly and efficiently, independently and as part of a team, must be able to work well under pressure.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions for reading recipes and daily baking prep checklists.
  • Must possess excellent customer service skills and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to multi-task and resolve issues simultaneously without sacrificing quality or safety.
  • Excellent organizational skills and must be detail oriented.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1-2 year Culinary degree highly preferred.
  • At least 5+ years of strong culinary experience required, preferably in a senior living hospitality or similar setting.
  • Current ServSafe Certification is required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform repetitive motion such as reaching, bending, stooping and Hand wrist and body movement on-line cutting/ preparing dessert items.
  • Ability to lift up to a maximum of 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work and stand 90% throughout the workday.
  • Must possess understanding of baking methods, procedures and proper knife handling skills.

Experience:

  • Culinary experience: 4 years (Preferred)
