GREEN HOUSE SMALL-HOME ASSISTED LIVING AND MEMORY CARE | WESTWOOD, MA

The innovative Green House®
Small-House Model

The Green House® Project is a national, cutting-edge movement developed by a Harvard-trained geriatrician. The model seeks to de-institutionalize long-term care by preserving the autonomy of all residents, also called “elders,” and arranging staff schedules around residents’ rhythms and preferences rather than simple efficiency.

As adopters of The Green House® Project small-house model, Birch Grove Assisted Living with Continuing Care and White Oak Cottages Memory Care provide personalized care and assistance. Elders are empowered to enjoy the benefits of living in a community while maintaining the personal schedules and daily routines that are important to them. And, most importantly, it’s a model that keeps the elder in control of how he or she will live each day.

“It feels like a home rather than an institution and I really like the philosophy of care, flexibility, and warmth.”

Features of a Green House home

In a Green House home, the traditional components of institutional care — semi-private rooms, long hallways, constant alarms, and flashing lights — are eliminated. In their place is an easy-to-navigate, peaceful home where elders can live as they choose, with the assistance of a consistent, specially trained care team. Features of our Green House-model homes at Birch Grove and White Oak Cottages include:
  • Small, self-contained households with 12 private suites per household
  • Specially trained staff of versatile workers to serve as managers of the home and spend most of their time interacting with the elders
  • Operating principles that focus on the individual’s needs for nurture and choice, and prioritize individual interests and preferences
  • Emphasis on respectful relationships among all people who live and work in the home
